‘Hide and Seek’ is a two piece video installation which focuses on the issue of communication and explores how meaning can be transmitted through every day, banal actions and gestures, how we use our bodies to communicate with others. Routine gestures repetitively drawn and redrawn place the viewer in a position to contemplate their meaning or lack of.
These films draw upon the reassessment and re-examination of an earlier work, ‘She is Us’. I had become conscious that a number of issues within the piece needed to be resolved, for example; the contrasting animation styles that separate the film in to two distinct sequences and the significance of these differences. By focusing on each sequence separately I began to emphasize the repetitive nature of the figure’s actions whilst also creating an individual visual dialogue for each figure. These dialogues are played out against each other repeatedly creating a strained interaction through which the figures endeavour to express their internal selves through gesture and physical interaction.
